Mitsubishi Lancer Ralliart best review 2013
|
|
Lancer Ralliart has a slight ( 2.0 -liter ) engine that makes big power ( 237 hp ) . This is the same basic engine as in the EVO ( 291 hp ) just not quite as freakishly strong for its size .However , even the 2 -liter 237 hp from an achievement worth pondering . Recently,
mid- 90s , 237 is the number of horsepower V - 8 and even today , a
typical very high output V - 8 - for example , the current Mustang GT 's
5.0 -liter , 400 hp V - 8 - do not approach the strength - per - liter output of the 2 -liter Mitsubishi delivers. The GT V - 8 will need to make more than 500 hp to the same as the 2.0 ' s power - per - liter benchmark .Acceleration - not surprisingly - very good . The Ralliart up to 60 in about 5.7 seconds , is not at all far behind the current EVO ( which got there in about 5 flat ) .Only two losses . Wait , three .One , Subaru WRX faster , up to 60 in just 5.3 seconds .Two
, Ralliart is equipped only with a six-speed dual clutch automatic (
odd ) is also the same unit that is used in top-of - the-line EVO MR . It
was a sophisticated piece of equipment with a variety of virtues ( more
on this below ) but baldfaced truth is that it's just more fun to work
the clutch itself . Unfortunately , if you want that third pedal , you have to increase $ 6,400 to EVO GSR ( $ 34.095 ) .Or buy a Subaru WRX instead. This last point - eating it . EPA
Ralliart prices in 17 cities , 25 highway , which is actually worse
mileage than cars powered V - 8 muscle like the current Ford Mustang GT
Boss 302 ( 17 city , 25 highway ) . And
- believe me - if you are driving the Ralliart as it is meant to be
driven , you will see your friends at the Exxon station very often .Little
turbo 2 is a hoot , but the mileage is poor ( and considering how
decent gas mileage car V - 8 and V - 6 -powered high performance has
become ) you may be asking yourself later on why you do not just go
ahead and get a V - 8 .
At first , you think there is something wrong .The light goes green , you stomp on the gas pedal and ... nothing. There is a momentary delay before anything actually happens , almost like an old muscle car with a carburetor bog - prone . But
then Ralliart comes alive - blitzing forward rush suddenly turbo boost
and firecracker - fast gear changes through a dual-clutch automated
manual . Within
about 50 meters you gather serious pace and if you keep your story will
be over 120 and climbing before your brain can catch up with the
reality of it all .This is a fast mover .And the initial lag ? On the one hand , it's kind of fun because what comes next . The ( instantaneous ) calm before the storm . It
is a big part of what makes driving a high- pressure turbo -boosted car
so special - and justify buying one of the cars as fast as the larger ,
non - turbo V - 6 or V - 8 even .Hot dog !But - it would be better with a real stick to play with . Then
you could end the four small , turbo spooling , before throwing the
clutch ( self) and launching the car with appropriate ferocity . True
, the clutch will probably not live long in this way , but then a car
like the Ralliart ( and even evil brother EVO ) is not designed to be a
transportation equipment 200,000 miles. But what about the Subaru WRX ? It
is faster ( and perhaps can be expected to live longer , either because
larger machines less stressful / hanged and also , frankly , because
Subarus have the track record is much better in that department ) but
less than that and the brat so - in my opinion - is not quite as fun to drive . He
does not have nearly the demon blast suddenly the power that Mitsubishi
does not - which reminds me , dear , from the '70s - era two - stroke
motorcycles . And - damn - they are fun !Handling is exceptional. The
Ralliart has the same basic layout as the race - ready suspension EVO ,
including driver - adjustable three - mode ( asphalt / Gravel / Snow )
AWD . Tire
package is not quite as aggressive as the EVO and you do not get the
big Brembo brakes are available with the EVO - but it is a difference
you will see only on the track , driving it out . On the streets , the Ralliart is still a very powerful machine that will outcorner nearly all comers . Especially
newcomers in that price range - that unless Subaru WRX not even offer a
high performance AWD system ( and not a driver - adjustable Soobie ) or
dual - clutch manual transmission automatic race - bred , well .
